European Union Directives
Some 10 years ago the European Commission introduced new approach directives across the member states which today have lead to many products bearing the CE symbol.

The CE mark defines:

1) Conformity to all the obligations placed on the manufacturer and/or
distributor by virtue of all relevant Community directives providing for
  CE marking.
2) The fact that the person responsible for fixing of the marking has verified
that the product conforms to all the Community total harmonization
  provisions that apply to it.

New approach directives share a number of basic principles. These include mandatory essential provisions that apply to a product and a requirement that all member states of the EU ensure that products which are not in conformity with the essential provisions of the directives are not allowed to circulate in the territories of the Member States. In order to preserve the principle of freedom of movement of goods the organization responsible for either manufacturing the goods or placing them on the market is provided with the means to certify conformity with the directive/s applied to their product.
